Virtual Symposium: Reflections on the ICON-S Mexico Book “Constitutional Justice in Times of Change”

Next Tuesday, April 28, a group of Latin American legal scholars will be discussing the recent book prepared by the ICON-S Mexican Chapter and sponsored by the Mexican Supreme Court, entitled “Constitutional Justice in Times of Change,” edited by Roberto Niembro and Sergio Verdugo. The book includes contributions that a group of scholars presented during the Santiago 2019 ICON-S Conference. The online conference will be hosted by the Mexican Supreme Court, and it will feature presentations by Roberto Gargarella (U. Torcuato Di Tella and UBA), Francisca Pou Giménez (ITAM), Roberto Saba (UBA and U. of Palermo), and Sergio Verdugo (UDD).

From the authors: The book invites us to reflect on the role that constitutional judges can and should perform in a democratic system, including approaching the phenomenon of the judicialization of politics or the politicization of the judiciary from diverse perspectives. The book also examines the role of Latin American constitutional courts in times of crises or democratic erosion, trying to identify the diverse ways in which judicial power can be justified in fragile political systems, democracies that are exposed to authoritarian turns, or even competitive authoritarian regimes.

The online conference will be live-streamed in Spanish on YouTube and Facebook on Tuesday, April 28, from 10:00 am to 11:30 am (Mexican Time), 11:00 am to 12:30 am (Chilean Time), and 12:00 am to 1:30 pm (Argentinian Time). You can follow the conference here. Also, the book can be downloaded here
