Developments in Constitutional Courts
- On 21 March 2022, U.S. Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson began her four-day confirmation process to become the nation’s first Black female associate justice.
- The Constitutional Court of South Africa endorsed a finding by an Equality Court that a vicious attack on Zionism and Zionists constituted hate speech based on Jewish ethnicity and religion because the offending speaker mentioned Hitler in his attack on Zionists.
- On 21 March 2022, Colombia’s Constitutional Court has decriminalized abortions before twenty-four weeks of pregnancy.
- On 1 March 2022, Colombia’s Constitutional Court ruled that the government must introduce a third gender marker option for non-binary people on official identity documents.
- On 17 March 2022, Peru’s Constitutional Court decided to restore a presidential pardon and to release former president Alberto Fujimori who was sentenced to 25 years in prison in 2009 for crimes against humanity under international law.
In the News
- Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s minority government has reached a deal with the New Democratic Party (NDP) to stay in power until 2025.
- President Biden flew in Europe to take part to an emergency Nato summit, a G7 summit and a meeting of the European Council to address Russia’s ongoing military aggression against Ukraine.
- A European Council on the Ukrainian crisis was held on 24 and 25 March 2022. The meeting was virtually joined by the Ukrainian President Zelensky.
- In occasion of the “Ukraine Solidarity Days”, the European Parliament launched a new website in cooperation with the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s parliament, with information on how the EU has supported Ukraine since 2014.
- In Afghanistan, the Taliban ordered the closure of secondary schools for girls, which had just reopened.

- Jean-Philippe Derosier, La responsabilité des gouvernants (2022) (the volume analyses through a comparative method the theme of the responsibility of the rulers).
- Christian A. Larsen (ed.), Migrants and Welfare State (forthcoming 2022) (this book explores how Northern European countries have sought to balance their welfare states with increased levels of migration).
Calls for Papers and Announcements
- The Government of Paraná Government announces the Program for Hosting Ukrainian Scientists with the support of Araucária Foundation and the General Superintendence of Science, Technology and Higher Education (SETI). There are 50 openings.
- The World Congress of Constitutional Law, organized by the International Association of Constitutional Law (IACL-AIDC), will be held in Johannesburg (South Africa) from 5-9 December 2022. The deadline to submit abstracts is 30 June 2022.
- World Justice Project (WJP) invites application for the position of a Research Director to support a new project to assess the rule of law in the European Union.
- The International Association of Constitutional Law (IACL-AIDC) is pleased to announce its second online Junior Scholars Forum, to be hosted by the UNAM Institute for Legal Research and the Ottawa Public Law Centre on September 8, 9, 12, 13, 14, 2022. Interested junior scholars should submit a title and abstract by 1° April 2022.
- The third annual conference of the Italian chapter of the International Society of Public Law will take place in Bologna on 16 – 17 September 2022. The deadline to submit proposals is 1° June 2022.
- The Faculty of Law & Justice, UNSW Sydney, offers up to two PhD Scholarships for applicants with outstanding research potential and a demonstrated interest in comparative constitutional studies. The scholarship will commence at a mutually agreed date between May 2022 and July 2023. Applications are open until 31 March 2022.
- The “Titu Maiorescu” University is pleased to announce the International Conference on “Law, European Studies and International Relations – The patent universality of inheritance law. Lex successionis between legislative tradition and modern values” that will be held in Romania on 12-13 May 2022. The deadline to submit abstracts is 11 April 2022.
- Ljubljana Law Review welcome proposals for a special issue that stem from projects or activities that are currently ongoing or were completed in 2021 or will be completed in the first half of 2022, with a view of submission by the end of June 2022 the latest. The deadline to send proposals is 4 April 2022.
