Resources for Readers: The Future of the Canadian Senate

Tomorrow, the Canadian Supreme Court will begin three days of hearings on the constitutionality of proposed changes to the Senate of Canada. This could be the most important case in Canadian constitutional law since the 1998 Secession Reference.

The hearings will be broadcast live here starting tomorrow at 9:30am EST.

Readers may be interested in the following resources on the Senate Reference:

  1. Earlier this year, Michael Pal (Toronto) published here on I-CONnect one of the first analyses of tomorrow’s Senate Reference.
  2. The Supreme Court’s Office of the Registrar has prepared a helpful summary of the matter.
  3. The Government of Canada has prepared its own fact sheet on the reference.
  4. Canada’s leading news magazine has also prepared a guide for popular consumption.

We hope to publish commentary on the hearings shortly after they conclude.
